A Trekkers Criticism of Trek

(Minor Spoilers)

star-trek-xi-poster

I enjoyed Trek. In fact, I enjoyed it quite a bit. It was exciting, visually arresting, and just a well done action movie.

However, herein lies the problem. This isn’t a Star Wars movie, it’s Star Trek. It’s not enough to have a 2 straight hours of fight scenes and space battles.

Concerns Before Seeing Watchmen

images

I love Watchmen (not the watchmen, you fucking hipsters).

When I was first getting into comic books this was the book that cemented me as a fan of the genre. It does everything right and, deservedly, has secured it’s place as one of the top comics ever written.

Education, The Internet, & Asimov

Talk about a genius. This rediscovered interview shows Issac Asimov speaking about education’s past and future as well as it’s relation to the Internet (this interview is from 1989 mind you, quite some time before the Internet as we know it emerged).

You see, in the past only the wealthy could afford to teach their children. They hired private tutors who, if they were good teachers, based their curriculum on the student’s interests and abilities.

As time progressed we formed mass education. But, this was only possible by making teachers teach large groups at once. While this allowed learning to be for more than the privileged few, it also lost it’s personal emphasis and forced students to learn the same things at the same speed. Of course, this creates a whole list of problems, but chief among them is that it makes learning a chore, as it becomes something that is “forced up0n you.”

My New Newphew!

On a slightly, ah hell, completely personal note I would like to introduce to you to Maddox Ian Padilla. O’ my beloved droogs, I hardly know him but I’m fairly sure he is going to be one kick ass kid.  You can’t see it in the pictures, but he has some monster hands. Watch out Garnett.

The End Is Extremely Fucking Nigh: The Top 10 Zombie Movies of All Time (1 of 5)

I love zombies.

When done right, they have the ability to blow away every other style of horror movies. Unfortunately, most zombie movies S-U-C-K. There are dozens of lame, cash grabbing movies featuring our darling dead.

A good zombie movie is rare. A great one is like a, for lack of clever analogy, something that cannot be missed. It receives an instantaneous cult-following and is remembered and cherished long after academy award winners and box offices smashes fade away from the the public’s eye.

Count my motives as sinister, but I would love nothing more than to add a few cultists to some great zombie movies and that is my purpose with the list.

5 Reasons To Vote For Ralph Nader

Why I Voted For Ralph Nader

Today Barack Obama will win the presidency of the United States. He will, deservingly, defeat John McCain by a large margin and that, my friends, is a good thing. The politics of the Republican party have driven the country closer to the brink than in 80-90 years. The barbarians are at the gates folks

While I am hoping and plan on celebrating a Barack victory, he is not the candidate that I plan on voting for. Today, I will cast my ballot for Ralph Nader.

When I tell people this, they mostly ask me why I am “wasting” my vote. To this I can only say that, one vote cast is never a vote wasted. Instead of voting against John McCain or against Barack Obama, I choose to vote for a candidate. Ralph Nader most closely follows my own ideology and beliefs. I believe that the initiatives and ideas that he has for the country will benefit it much more than those of the Democratic, Republican, and even Libertarian party.

Today, when you go to the polls, vote your conscience. Don’t vote just because someone has a chance to win, vote for someone you would like to see win.

Waiting for Gustav

I’m sitting at the front desk of the Mobile airport watching the weather grow worse. Thick clouds fill the sky, making it look like night fall is only moments away.  I can only type a few words before the phone rings and people are asking me the same questions about flights and the airport’s operations.

Crowds of people are jammed into Walmart, Winn Dixie and Brunoes. Lines of cars are waiting for gas that has increased by .25 cents a gallon in the past two days. The interstate is impassable.

People are nervous.

The Dark Knight Reviewed

WHAM! POW! SMACK! These words were once the thing people thought about when the heard the name Batman. Adam West, shark repellent purple gas and colorful costumes filled this campier than camp show and sadly became the example for our hero.

Death of the Dream: The Fall of HD-DVD

This is a re-post of an article I did for my old blog. Seeing the recent lack of sales and continued soaring prices of Blu-Ray discs (Beowulf is only 34.99 at Best Buy!) and Blu-Ray players has lead me to say only one thing, I told ya so. It’s an inferior technology will never hold a substantial place in the market share.

WALL:E Sci-Fi Movie of the Year?

Okay, okay. I know. There isn’t much in the way of Sci-Fi these last ten years or so. The rise of Harry Potter and the renewed interest build by the Lord of the Rings films has lead toward a plethora of Fantasy. Which, despite Barnes & Nobles, BooksaMillion and Boarders IS NOT A PART OF SCI-FI AND SHOULD NOT BE CATEGORIZED AS SUCH.

Obama’s Abandonment of the Base

I’m not suprised that it has happened. Just disappointed.

No, dear readers, we liberals learned long ago that most of our views are shunned come election year. For some reason, our candidates feel the need to move away from the party’s base and try to reach out towards those holding social conservative views.

Goodbye George

“Just think, right now as you read this, some guy somewhere is gettin’ ready to hang himself.”                      – George Carlin

Yes folks, yesterday the greatest comedian in American history died at the age of 71.
George Carlin was not only a pioneer in free speech, but he is makes some very unfunny things funny.

Ren & Stimpy: A Look Back

I was a mere five years old when Ren and Stimpy premiered on Nickeoloden.  It was crude, immature, irrelevant and made very little sense. In other words, it was everything I wanted to watch but wasn’t allowed.

However, it being forbidden only made me want to watch it more and my earliest acts of rebellion became sneaking in a viewing at a friend’s house. Before I knew it, I was hooked and I can fondly remember spending many an hour in the pleasant company of Muddy the Muddskipper, Powdered Toast Man and our show’s namesakes.

The Postman is one of those movies that has a bad wrap because of a horrible movie adaptation (I'm looking at you, Kevin Costner). However, if you let such prejudices hold you back than you really are missing out on a great book.

It questions the spirit of America and what the dream of it entails. It's perfect for those seeking some patriotism in these unpatriotic times. The ending gets a little to actioney for my taste, but the buildup is great.
